About REDPINE

Thank you for taking time to view my Recent work.....

You'll see a lot of different styles and subject matter here; a natural result of survival in the freelance art market since 1977. Much of my new work is a result of my relationship with Civil Air Patrol since 2010. Since embarking on a new service path as CAP National Artist in 2021, I have been honored to create art portraying CAP's continuing history of service since its beginning in December 1941. Canvas prints are now available through Squadron Posters in a variety of sizes and formats.

Portfolio

REDPINE is an art studio tucked between towering pines overlooking a small Minnesota lake. It's a special place where I have been blessed to raise a family with my wonderful wife, Jan. I've worked as an illustrator for the past 40 years. Since finishing school at Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), methods for illustration have changed beyond what we could have imagined. I certainly don't miss cutting those acetate airbrush stencils with a hot-knife at 3 a.m., pushing towards the FedEx drop-off deadline the next day. Graphic arts technology has given us a wide open canvas with the freedom to revise our scribblings endlessly; and no illustration board patching is required. You'll see lots of different subject matter and styles in my portfolio; I'm a survivor of years adapting to stay relevant and keep the wolf from the door.

My approach always starts with pencil on paper. From there it goes to the scanner and is shaped and refined digitally, colored with my swatches of pastels and watercolor, and either finished digitally or printed on canvas or paper for traditional painting and drawing. Either way, the scent of pines is no longer defiled by burning acetate.
